There are no frustrating restart points you start from where you die, and with no energy bar, death comes often – but it will be your fault. There are 27 levels, and no continues on the last 7 – so you would have to be some kind of wiz kid to complete it with no save states. It is extremely fast paced, and it is hard as nails. There are power-ups to collect and tricks to learn. You can continue (up to level 20) and the score will return to zero at game over so no way to cheat yourself to a high score. It is finely tuned for a high score challenge with points available in bonuses, kills, and time taken. The game is excellently designed for quick arcade action. He has a unique weapon that is a spiked shield on a chain cool. He is a nimble muscle bound superhero type cool. He is a warrior returned from the grave cool. The reasons for Rygar being so awesome are fairly ‘in your face’ apparent from the moment you put a coin into the machine the game’s roots being distinctly from the golden coin op era. It has everything that makes a perfect arcade game and I am still playing it and getting excited by it 27 years after its release…įirstly Rygar himself (if you ignore the confused translations of the storyline which say Rygar might be the end of game baddie). It is very easy to explain actually so the fact that it is a relatively underrated classic is the only real mystery here. I am very glad to have the opportunity to tell you all ‘why I love’ Rygar, and why it remains my favourite game of all time.
